How Long Does Self Tan Last? (And How to Make It Last Longer)

A fresh self tan can keep you glowing for around five to seven days, depending on the formula, your skin type, and your aftercare. Of course, we all want the gorgeous glow to stick around, especially if you’ve got a weekend away or a big event coming up, so let’s talk about longevity.

How long does self tanner last? The short answer, by product type

How long your tanner lasts depends on the formula you use. Some formulas are made for an instant color hit, while others will build gradually or develop over several hours for a longer-lasting glow.

A gradual tanner builds color over two to three days when applied daily, so you can gradually work it up to your desired color. Instant bronzer, on the other hand, gives you a one-day glow that washes off in the shower, so it’s a great option when you’re getting ready for a last-minute event.

Below is a breakdown of how long Bondi Sands fake tanner products can last:

Longevity

Lasts all day until you wash it off in the shower.

Typically 5–7 days, depending on your skin prep and aftercare.

Builds color over several applications and can be used regularly to maintain your glow.

Typically 5–7 days once developed, with longevity depending on application and how quickly your skin naturally exfoliates.

Typically 5–7 days, with Bondi Sands Express formulas developing in 1–3 hours.

Why does your tan fade?

Your tan fades as your skin naturally renews itself. The DHA in self tanner reacts with amino acids in the surface layers of your skin, creating the temporary color that gives you that sunkissed glow.

As those skin cells naturally shed, your tan gradually fades with them. Exfoliation, swimming and friction can speed things up, which is why you may notice your color fading a little faster in some areas than others.

What makes your tan fade faster?

A few everyday things can affect how long your glow sticks around. A little know-how goes a long way when it comes to keeping your color looking fresh.

  • Sweat: Sweat and friction can affect how long your tan lasts, particularly during workouts or on warm days. If you’re going from a hot Pilates class to the beach, give your skin some extra TLC afterwards.
  • Skin prep and hydration: Smooth, hydrated skin gives your tan a great base. Exfoliate before tanning and moisturize throughout the week to help your color fade evenly.
  • Water exposure: Swimming in saltwater or chlorine can contribute to faster fading, while long hot showers can dry out your skin. Keep those showers comfortably warm and gently pat your skin dry afterwards.
  • Hair removal: Waxing and some other hair-removal methods can lift your tan, so we suggest doing it before applying your fake tan (it’ll go on smoother anyway!).

How to make your self tanner last longer

Want to get the most out of your fake tan? A few simple tweaks to your prep and aftercare will make a world of difference. It’s all about being high maintenance to be low maintenance, right?

  • Prep your skin: Exfoliate 24 hours before self tanning to create a smooth, even base. Pay extra attention to dry areas like your elbows, knees and ankles.
  • Start with clean, dry skin: Before applying your tan, make sure your skin is clean and completely dry. It gives your tan an even base to develop on.
  • Give your tan time to develop: Follow the recommended development time for your formula before jumping in the shower.
  • Keep showers lukewarm: Long, hot showers can dry out your skin and encourage faster exfoliation. Keep the temperature comfortable and gently pat your skin dry rather than rubbing.
  • Moisturize daily: Keeping your skin hydrated is one of the easiest ways to help your tan fade evenly. Moisturize daily, especially after showering, to lock in moisture! Bonus points if it’s with a gradual tanning moisturizer.
  • Go easy on exfoliation: Once your tan has developed, hold off on exfoliating products until you’re ready to remove your old tan and start fresh.
  • Be mindful of swimming: Chlorine and saltwater can contribute to faster fading. If you’re heading for a swim, moisturize beforehand and rinse off afterwards.
  • Top up your tan: You don’t have to wait until your self tanner has completely faded before topping it up. Refresh your glow with a gradual tan to keep it looking even and fresh for longer.

When should you reapply?

It depends on your tanning routine and the look you’re after. If you like to maintain a bronzey glow, you can generally reapply a mousse or foam every five to seven days (after exfoliating the old tan off), while gradual tanner can be used more regularly to build and maintain color. Ultimately, how often you reapply is totally up to you!

Before your next application, remove any remaining old tan so you have a smooth, even base. This is where a tan eraser becomes really handy to easily get your skin prepped for another round of bronze.

FAQ

Does fake tanner last longer than a spray tan?
Fake tanner and spray tans last around 5–7 days, depending on the product, your skin and your aftercare. Regular moisturizing, gentle showers and going easy on exfoliation can help them last longer.

How long does self tanner take to develop?
Development time depends on the formula you’re using. Instant tans develop, well, instantly. Mousses, foams and gradual tanners take a little longer, working best when given multiple hours to develop. It’s best to follow product-specific instructions in order to achieve the best fake tan possible.

Does moisturizer really make a tan last longer?
Absolutely. Think of moisturizer as part of the routine instead of an optional extra. Apply it after your shower, and your skin will stay feeling soft and smooth while your self tanner does its thing for longer.

Can I shower after applying self tan?
Yep, but don’t jump straight in. Your skin needs a little time to get glowy, so check the development time for your formula before you turn on the taps. Then rinse off when it’s ready and enjoy the big reveal.
