The sun is synonymous with the calm, laidback Australian outdoors. We love a good morning walk by the beach, weekend sports with mates and long brunches outside.

That said, knowing how to keep your skin safe while under the sun is essential to supporting healthy-looking skin, now and into the future. With a few simple habits and the rightsunscreen products, sun protection can feel easy, natural and even complement your golden glow from ourself tanners.

To help you feel your best after hitting the great outdoors, we’ve compiled a helpful guide about all things suncare so you can stay looking radiant and healthy, all summer long.

How to Stay Sun Safe in the Sun Without Losing Your Glow

Understand when your skin needs the most protection

UV exposure can happen even on cool and cloudy days. That's why daily sun protection matters, especially when you're spending extended time outdoors.

Your skin is most exposed when you're:

    • Outdoors during the middle of the day, typically between the hours of 10:00am to 3:00pm

    • Near reflective surfaces like sand or water, which ‘bounce off’ sunrays and hit your skin

    • Exercising, swimming or spending hours outside without shade

Being mindful of these moments helps you protect your skin without overthinking it.

What are UVA and UVB sunrays?

You may have heard these terms come up when sunscreen is discussed, and it’s important to know the differences between the two.

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are present all year round, even on cloudy days. They're the main culprit behind premature ageing and can contribute to long-term skin damage.

Whereas UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and can play a key role in skin cancer risk. They're strongest during summer and midday hours, but can still affect your skin year-round.

The good news? Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both. Our products like theBondi Sands Face SPF 50+ Sunscreen Lotion and Face SPF 50+ Sunscreen Fluidboth fall into this category, providing very high UVA and UVB protection with instant skin hydration.

We always recommend looking for sunscreen that clearly states broad-spectrum protection to ensure you're covered from all angles.

Sunscreen is essential, but it's not the only step

Sunscreen plays a key role in sun safety, but it works best as part of a broader approach.

Alongside sunscreen, simple habits can help reduce sun exposure:

    • Seeking shade when possible

    • Wearing protective clothing like hats and sunglasses

    • Taking breaks from direct sunlight throughout the day

These small choices work together to support your skin’s comfort and protection, especially during long days outdoors.

How to choose a sunscreen you'll actually want to wear

The best sunscreen is the one you'll use consistently.

Look out for formulas that feel comfortable on your skin and suit your lifestyle. Lightweight lotions and fluids are popular for everyday wear and acne-prone skin, while more hydrating options work well for dry or sun-exposed skin.

Exploring ourBondi Sands Sunscreen collection can help you find a formula that fits seamlessly into your routine, whether you're heading to the beach, running errands or spending the day outside.

How much sunscreen should you apply?

Using sunscreen correctly makes a real difference. For full-body protection, generally you’ll need to apply approximately 35ml of sunscreen. That’s about seven teaspoons all up.

Broken up into sections, that’s about one teaspoon each for the face, neck and ear area, then each arm and leg, front and back. However, you may need more or less depending on your face size and shape. Make sure you use enough to cover the entire area, including the eyelids, ears, and neck.

    What about reapplying sunscreen?

Reapplication is just as important, especially if you're swimming, sweating or spending long periods outside. Keeping sunscreen nearby makes topping up easy and helps maintain protection throughout the day.

We recommend applying sunscreen at least 20 minutes before sun exposure and then reapplying every two hours.

Reapply sunscreen often if you go swimming, after towel-drying, or after sweating during activity. Even though our suncare products are water-resistant, you’ll still need a top-up after these activities to keep your skin extra protected.

Don’t forget to protect your lips too! OurSPF 50+ Lip Balms will keep your lips protected, hydrated and come in a range of scents.

What about if you’re prone to acne and breakouts?

We understand if you’re worried that sunscreen could cause acne or breakouts. The thought of putting on something greasy and clogging pores is enough to freak anyone out, especially if you’re after healthy-looking skin.

But we come bringing good news: our suncare range has been formulated to be broad spectrum, non-greasy, gentle on the skin and non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores.

    Sun-safe fun starts with you

The key to being sun smart is tackling sun protection holistically and not just relying on a single application of sunscreen. It’s all about balance.

With a combination of sunscreen, protective habits and thoughtful choices, you can enjoy time outdoors while supporting healthy-looking skin. Sun safety and enjoying your golden glow aren't opposites. When done well, they go hand in hand, so you stay looking radiant all day, everyday.

Explore the Bondi Sands sunscreen range to find a sun protection product that works with your routine, so you can step outside feeling confident, comfortable and ready for whatever the day brings.
